A Deep Dive
Choosing materials can be complicated and the options are ever-evolving. Prior to launching Everist, we spoke to metals traders and municipal recycling experts. Here’s what we learned.
Choose 100% recycled paper
We love a colorful box, but we love trees in the ground even more. The paper we use for our cartons and mailer boxes is both 100% recycled and 100% recyclable, meaning trees aren't cut down to make Everist products. These boxes can also be composted, but recycling is more efficient. And we don’t ruin the recyclability of our boxes by covering them with plastic shipping tape or fancy foils. Only paper-based labels and stickers are selected so that these boxes can easily go in the bin (mixing materials is a recycling no no).
Aluminum is infinitely recyclable.
Aluminum is one of the world's most recycled materials because it has a high resale value, providing economic incentive to recycle. Aluminum can be recycled directly back into itself over and over again in a true closed loop, unlike plastic which can only be downcycled once. Aluminum is also light (that's less carbon to ship) and durable (perfect for the shower). And, in case you’re wondering, it doesn't rust.
Aluminum can be melted down at a high temperature to remove any impurities (including the shampoo residue left in your tube) and our tubes and tins contain a BPA-free epoxy lining in them to prevent any aluminum transfer into the product.
Aluminum is shower safe.
As far as materials go, glass is another good choice from a recyclability and safety perspective. However, glass can be heavy to ship, increasing its carbon footprint. We also didn't think glass was a great option for in the shower (we think you'd agree).
